Primal Scream

Primal Scream

Formed in Glasgow in 1982 by Bobby Gillespie, a member of Manchester-based Glaswegian indie act The Wake, Primal Scream's career didn't really take off until the legendary frontman had left his temporary role as drummer of The Jesus and Mary Chain and relocated the band to Brighton.

They would go on to become a key part of the mid-1980s indie pop scene, but eventually moved away from their jangly sound, finding mainstream success with their third album, the multi-Platinum selling Madchester and 1960s Psychedelia influenced 1991 dance rock album Screamadelica, which spawned the hits "Loaded" and "Movin' On Up".

The album would introduce the world to co-vocalist, the late, great Mancunian songstress Denise Johnson, who would help shift their sound to a more Memphis blues and classic rock influence for their fourth album, 1994's Give Out but Don't Give Up, with its hit"Rocks".

Ever-evolving, by 1997 one Mancunian would make way for another as The Stone Roses bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield would replace Johnson for the  dub, ambient, krautrock and punk inspired Vanishing Point, with 2000's XTRMNTR taking the electro-industrial level up a notch with contributions from The Chemical Brothers and Bernard Sumner of New Order.

2002's Evil Heat joined the dots between their previous acid house and heavy rock releases, before they made a return to blues rock with 2006's Riot City Blues. which produced the band's highest-charting single, Country Girl (UK no.5).

2008's Beautiful Future saw them incorporate Philly soul with dark electro and rock'n'roll riffs, before Mani would leave the band and they would return to their psychedelic grooves.

In 2022 long time keyboard player Martin Duffy would tragically die due to a brain injury suffered after a fall at home in Brighton, and it wasn't until 2024 that bandmates Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes would return once more with their first album in over eight years.
